Whisky in the Northern Highlands

The Northern Highlands offer a particularly rewarding whisky journey. Distilleries are spread through dramatic coastal landscapes, fertile farmland and historic Highland communities, giving the region a character quite different from the concentrated whisky country of Speyside.

Depending on your interests, availability and starting point, a private Highland whisky tour might include renowned distilleries such as Balblair, Glenmorangie or The Singleton at Glen Ord, alongside specialist whisky shops, independent bottlers and smaller producers.

Not every itinerary includes the same places, and that is very much the point.

We recommend the combination of experiences that makes the most sense for you rather than working from a fixed list of compulsory stops.

Balblair Distillery

Set near the shores of the Dornoch Firth, Balblair is one of the defining distilleries of the Northern Highlands and a particularly important part of the tuigsear story.

Its traditional Highland character, beautiful setting and range of visitor experiences make it an excellent focal point for a private whisky day.

For guests interested in production, maturation and the character of Highland single malt, Balblair can offer considerably more than simply another tasting room.

Glenmorangie Distillery

Just outside Tain, Glenmorangie is internationally recognised for its elegant, fruit-forward spirit, famously produced using some of the tallest stills in Scotland.

Its location makes it particularly well suited to a thoughtfully paced Northern Highland itinerary, whether incorporated as a full experience or a more relaxed whisky stop depending on the day.

Dornoch and the Thompson Brothers

Dornoch has become an important destination for serious whisky enthusiasts.

The Thompson Brothers have developed an international reputation through their independent bottlings and the tiny Dornoch Distillery, while the town is also home to specialist whisky retail including Carnegie Whisky Cellars.

For collectors and enthusiasts in particular, time in Dornoch can be every bit as rewarding as another formal distillery tour.

The Singleton at Glen Ord

To the west of the Black Isle, Glen Ord offers another perspective on Highland whisky and can work particularly well for guests travelling from Inverness or those wishing to explore a different part of the region.

Home to The Singleton, the distillery provides a substantial visitor experience and can be incorporated where geography, timing and your wider interests make it the right fit.

Whisky Touring in Scotland’s Far North

For guests staying further north in Sutherland or Caithness, we also offer a dedicated North Coast Highland Whisky Tour.

This explores a different side of Highland whisky, with possibilities including Old Pulteney, Wolfburn and other carefully chosen experiences across Caithness and Scotland’s far north.

Rather than stretching a Northern Highland itinerary beyond what makes sense in a single day, this dedicated tour allows the region to be explored properly and at a relaxed pace.

    Depending on your interests, we may incorporate specialist whisky shops, independent bottlers, scenic stops, historic towns or carefully chosen local experiences between distillery visits.

    That flexibility also means the day can work extremely well for mixed groups where not everyone is equally interested in whisky.

  • How Many Distilleries Can We Visit?

    There is no single ideal number.

    For most guests, two substantial distillery experiences accompanied by one or two carefully chosen additional stops will create a far better day than attempting to collect as many distilleries as possible.

    Production tours and premium tastings can take considerable time, and distances in the Highlands are often greater than they first appear.

    Our role is to balance what you would most like to experience with what can genuinely be enjoyed in the time available.

    tuigsear is led by people with genuine experience of the Scotch whisky industry.

    Founder Liam Urquhart spent two formative years guiding at Balblair Distillery and has since developed extensive knowledge and relationships throughout the Highland whisky world.

    John MacDonald, former Distillery Manager at Balblair and a Keeper of the Quaich, brings more than 35 years of practical Scotch whisky experience, including a career spanning Glenmorangie, Glen Moray, Ardbeg and 18 years leading Balblair.
