Why choose tuigsear?
tuigsear (pronounced toog-shir) is a Scottish Gaelic word meaning “one who understands” or “connoisseur”. It reflects exactly what sits at the heart of what we do.
tuigsear specialises in private Highland whisky tours, Speyside whisky tours and personally hosted whisky tastings, creating carefully curated experiences for guests who want to understand Scotland’s whisky more deeply.
These are not simply journeys between distilleries. Every experience is shaped around the people joining us, their interests, their level of whisky knowledge and the way they want to spend their time in Scotland.
Founded by Highland native Liam Urquhart, tuigsear combines genuine whisky-industry experience, extensive local knowledge and long-standing relationships with distilleries, whisky makers and people throughout the Scotch whisky world.
Those relationships can create opportunities for exceptional tastings, introductions and distillery experiences that go beyond the ordinary visitor experience. Where appropriate and available, this can also include access that is not routinely offered to the general public.
From private whisky tastings to bespoke Highland and Speyside whisky journeys, everything is approached with the same philosophy: genuine expertise, thoughtful planning, warm Highland hospitality and experiences that never feel rushed or formulaic.
Personal. Knowledgeable. Unmistakably tuigsear.

Liam Urquhart
Founder and Lead Host at tuigsear
Liam is the founder and lead host of tuigsear, specialising in private whisky tours and tastings throughout the Scottish Highlands and Speyside.
A Highland native with more than five years of experience in the Scotch whisky industry, including two formative years guiding at Balblair Distillery, Liam brings practical first-hand knowledge of whisky production, maturation, distillery life and the stories behind the spirit.
His time at Balblair helped shape an approach to whisky that goes far beyond memorised facts. For Liam, the best whisky experiences are about understanding what is in the glass, the people and places behind it, and creating enough time for guests to properly enjoy both.
Since founding tuigsear, Liam has developed close relationships with distilleries, whisky makers and others across the industry. These connections, combined with his knowledge of the Highlands, allow each experience to be planned around the individual guest rather than a predetermined route.
Whether hosting someone discovering Scotch whisky for the first time or an experienced collector looking for something more unusual, Liam’s approach remains relaxed, personal and deeply knowledgeable.

John MacDonald
Highland Whisky Veteran and Former Distillery Manager at Balblair
With more than 35 years in the Scotch whisky industry, John MacDonald brings an extraordinary depth of practical distilling knowledge to tuigsear.
John began his career at Glenmorangie, progressing from warehouseman through production roles including mashman and stillman before becoming assistant manager. During his career with The Glenmorangie Company, his experience also extended to Ardbeg and Glen Moray.
He later became Distillery Manager at Balblair, a position he held for 18 years.
John is also a Keeper of the Quaich, an honour recognising those who have made a significant contribution to the Scotch whisky industry.
His knowledge encompasses decades of whisky production, distillery operations, maturation and the people and traditions that have shaped Highland whisky.
Yet what makes time with John particularly special is not simply the depth of that experience. It is the warmth, humour and perspective with which he shares it.
For guests who want to go beyond simply visiting distilleries and gain a deeper understanding of Scotch whisky from someone who has spent a lifetime making it, John offers something genuinely rare.

“We so enjoyed our two days of touring - both the Northeast Highlands and Speyside. Liam was a stellar guide. We can't say enough about his knowledge, kindness and sense of humour - but also, his ability to listen and adapt plans to accommodate our interests and tastes. What a treat to be able to just relax, enjoy and not drive! Those two day will never be forgotten - such interesting conversations, wonderful food and the whisky...ohhhhhh.. the whisky!! Thank you so much for taking care of us!”

“Absolutely amazing tour, Liam our tour guide was super clear, easy and helpful, explaining different and answering our endless questions, and felt to us one of the guys. Not only I recommend but I am certain, if I am back to the Highlands, I will be doing the tour again..”

“In a word, our experience was "EXCELLENT"! Liam was our tour director, guide, driver and expert in everything about Scotch whisky. Knowledgeable, friendly, funny, safe and accommodating, Liam took us through some amazing countryside often along quiet local roads to distilleries that offered a wide range of whisky choices. He helped us understand what might be expected from each tasting. I highly recommend booking a tour. Thank you Liam!!!”
